PALM BEACH ESTATE FIND! A striking Cubist-style depiction of entwined lovers by renowned Salvadoran artist Carlo Mejia. Mejia is the former director of El Salvador’s National Gallery who fled to the US in 1980. He now resides in Florida and we were told this was purchased directly from the artist in the late 90s or early 2000s. It is oil on canvas backed by board and signed lower left. The painting itself measures approximately 14” x 23” and overall framed measurements are 21.5” x 30.5”. The picture is a little dusty and has one small bit of paint loss (shown). The frame is a bit scuffed and shows some signs of wear. Please ask any and all questions prior to offer or purchase.

While researching his work we found this interesting story:

“In 1959, a thirteen year old Carlo Mejia exhibited three paintings at the Biennale de Paris. An older gentleman was impressed by the boy's work. "Your work reminds me of Picasso," declared the man. The boy boldly replied "But I'm much better than Picasso!" His admirer was later introduced as Pablo Picasso who had just purchased Carlo’s prizewinning painting and would go on to arrange a full scholarship for him at the Académie des Beaux-Arts.”
