Palm Beach Estate Find!! Massive Alfredo Barbini SCAVO Art Glass Vase Bowl Vessel measuring 11” Tall and 9.5” across the top. Etched in the base “Mayor’s Made In Italy Murano.” Mayor’s was a fine jewelry store which also sold upscale decorative art and objects. We were told this was purchased new in the 80s or 90s and is in pristine condition, with no damage whatsoever.
‘Scavo' literally means 'excavated' and refers to the rough surface of the glass, which imitates the appearance of old, excavated Greco-Roman glass. This effect was obtained by covering the glass with semi-melted glass powders mixed with sand. This texture creates a random, rough abstract pattern which enhances the beautiful turquoise green to blue ombré effect. Barbini is considered a master of this effect and his pieces are highly prized by collectors internationally.
